India Leading the Nokia's Mobile Market

According to some latest news and researches, India is leading the Nokia's mobile market, passing the United States for the first time. China remains the only country to have a larger market share.

In addition, as of this month, the handset manufacturer's factory in Sriperumbudur, Chennai, has exported 60 million phones to 58 countries. Nokia Siemens Network recently announced its intention to invest $100 million to develop Indian telecommunications over the next three years.

"India is playing an increasingly important role in the global economy buoyed by impressive economic growth, skilled manpower and tremendous business opportunity," said Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo, president and CEO of Nokia, in a company statement. "As the market leader in devices and infrastructure, Nokia is committed to build the telecom ecosystem in the country and foster the creation of a favorable environment for collaboration and economic development."

Amp'd Mobile shutting downToday

According to different sources all over the world, Amp'D Mobiles is shuttign down its services today. The embattled MVNO alerted subscribers to the shutdown via text message over the weekend, urging consumers wishing to port their Amp'd phone number to a rival carrier to do so by the end of business today. No early termination fee will apply, although prepaid subscribers due an outstanding unpaid credit, rebate or refund will need to file a claim "to be considered for payment." According to the FAQ, Amp'd "is currently in discussions with several parties" exploring a potential acquisition.

Amp'd customers were alerted to the shutdown via text message over the weekend. (Though numbers should theoretically still be portable after the shutdown, it will likely be easier to do so now.)

Amp'd was well known as Mobile Virtual Network Operator, or MVNO, a term which means it doesn't have its own infrastructure but rather leases network space from other carriers (in this case, Verizon). Other (relatively) popular MVNOs include Virgin Mobile, Helio, and Boost Mobile. To date, no MVNO has made much of a dent in the U.S. cellular market, though many continue to try.

Apple on it's way......

Apple and AT&T released the iPhone on June 29 in the US. The launch appears to have broken all records, including that of media hysteria, and by any measure it was a huge success. At this time, it appears that over the first three days alone Apple sold at least 500,000 iPhones — unsubsidized, unlike almost all other handsets sold in the US — which is more than the Motorola RAZR sold in its first month. In comparison, the iPhone has generated roughly 200m mentions on the Web, according to Google.

Whether the iPhone turns into a long-term success or not, however, the combination of excitement and fear it has stirred has already caused a number of changes in the mobile communications industry. Most important is that the device has raised user expectations— and not just for that superior design for which Apple is famous. The iPhone has already woken up a large portion of the market to the benefits of a menu-free, multi-touch user interface, to the idea of mobile Internet access, and to the opportunity in software and device integration.
