IBM will spend 100 million on mobile research

Mobile world is chnaging slowly and now big brands of computing world are jumping in. In a recent news report it was anounced that IBM plans to spend 100 million USD on mobile research facusing on analytics; security; privacy and user interface . The research aims to bring a pie from mobile based applications for IBM.

IBM’s research will add $100 million to wireless efforts over the next five years – $4 million less than venture firms invested in the wireless industry for the entire month of May. Currently mobile innovation is primarily benefiting consumers, who can use mobile devices to read books, find out the name of songs, shop and even track their fitness goals. Enterprise adoption of novel applications and phones, meanwhile, is still lagging over concerns about corporate security. IBM could help change that.

IBM investment will not bring any change to this industry, but it could lead to IBM buying up some startups — if its research convinces it that there’s a high-value software or services play that allows Big Blue to make money in mobile.

Power and Associates 2007 Wireless Customer Satisfaction StudySM. Last week, Sony Ericsson also ranked highest among wireless mobile phones brands in the J.D. Power and Associates Canadian Wireless Customer Satisfaction Study. "Sony Ericsson continues to show a strong commitment to the North American market with an expanding portfolio of compelling devices for every consumer," said Najmi Jarwala, president of Sony Ericsson North America. "Receiving the top ranking in the J.D. Power and Associates study is a reflection of Sony Ericsson's ongoing ability to deliver eye-catching, feature-rich and high-quality products that enhance the consumer experience." In the U.S., Sony Ericsson ranked highest among mobile phone brands with a score of 741, significantly above the industry average. Sony Ericsson received significantly higher than industry average scores in features and battery function categories. The brand ranks higher than the industry average in physical design, operation and durability factors. In Canada, the company ranked highest among mobile phone brands with a score of 728, performing particularly well in the features, physical design, battery and operation factors. The study measured customers' satisfaction with wireless handsets based on five key product performance factors, including physical design, operation, features, handset durability and battery function. A joint venture between Sony and Ericsson, Sony Ericsson entered the wireless handset market in 2001. Since its inception, it has released a number of Sony co-branded handsets, including the music-centric Walkman brand and the imaging-focused Cyber-shot brand in 2005 and 2006, respectively.

Greystripe Hits 14 Million Downloads Of Free Mobile Games

According to a latest post from TechCrunch, GreyStripe has passed the 14 million downloads mark on its free mobile gaming content site Gamejump.com in just over 12 months.

Gamejump.com’s model provides downloadable mobile gaming content ad supported and free in a market where paid downloads are the norm. Ads are displayed before and after each game.

Greystripe took $8.9million in Series B funding in May, in a round led by Steamboat Ventures, the VC arm of the Walt Disney Company; good credentials for a gaming content provider.

Gamejump.com features 800 games by 70 publishers and includes a variety of genres to appeal to different users. Gamejump has seen users download an average of 3.4 games each and the number of females users downloading games has been fairly close to the number of male users.

Greystripe recently signed a deal with Konami, the publisher of titles including Frogger and Dance Dance Revolution, that will see Konami’s extensive catalog of games being provided for free to Gamejump.com users. The paid mobile download industry likes to label free game services as delivering inferior quality; the provision of Konami content would seem to suggest that this isn’t the case, and certainly it’s a positive sign that the free ad-supported model of mobile gaming may actually be a winner.

Pirated Simpson Movie on Mobile

According to Asher Moses and Les Kennedy, a 21-year-old man from the western Sydney suburb of Prairiewood faces up to five years' imprisonment after he was charged with uploading a pirated copy of The Simpsons Movie on the internet.

Adrianne Pecotic, executive director of the Australian Federation Against Copyright Theft, said it was the first illegal copy of the hit movie to be intercepted anywhere in the world.

Police alleged the man illegally filmed the movie via a mobile phone on July 26, the first day of release, and within hours had uploaded the footage onto the internet.

The man was arrested in a raid on his home yesterday and charged by Federal Police with copyright theft after information provided to the AFP by the movie's producer, 20th Century Fox in the US.
